The inner west legends at Marrickville’s Philter Brewing are striking an absolutely beautiful balance between light and dark with their limited-release Black IPA. Proving that contrast is a beautiful thing, this winter warmer skillfully layers heavy West Coast hop aromatics over a wonderfully subtle, highly polished dark malt backbone. It pours a striking, near opaque midnight black with a tight, frothy tan crown. On the nose, it hits you with a punchy, vibrant payload of squeezed citrus, tropical fruits, and sticky pine resin, neatly laced with a soft whisper of cocoa and caramel. The palate is brilliantly medium bodied and smooth, pairing its bright, juicy hop oils against a gentle, roasty chocolate complexity. Finishing with a long, satisfyingly crisp, and clean bitterness, it is an IPA lover's absolute dream that never feels heavy or cloying.
