The Newstead flavor alchemists at Range Brewing are scratching a serious retro itch and bringing a beautifully forgotten style back to life with California Grizzly. Throwing it completely back to the glorious era of malt forward craft beer before the world went totally hazy, this American Brown Ale pays spectacular homage to classic West Coast structure. It pours a crystal-clear, rich chestnut brown with gorgeous, subtle crimson flashes at the edges and a creamy tan head. On the nose, a generous all-US dry-hop lineup of Simcoe and Mosaic delivers a punchy aromatic payload of fresh blueberries, passionfruit, and resinous pine. The palate is wonderfully medium bodied, silky, and balanced, layering those same juicy hop oils over a deeply comforting backbone of toasted caramel and chocolate biscuit malts. Finishing incredibly clean and dry with a lingering, snappy hop bitterness, it is a brilliantly executed, highly crushable masterpiece.
