The Newstead flavor savants at Range Brewing are rounding out their ultimate midnight diner fantasy series with the spectacular Late Nights III. As the final installment of their highly coveted sixth barrel-aged stout program, this decadent beast spent a slow slumber inside premium Buffalo Trace, Heaven Hill, and Cape Byron Distilling whisky barrels before being heavily conditioned on sweet salted caramel and pretzels. It pours a deep, motor oil thick obsidian, coating the glass with a treacle toffee colored spongey head. On the nose, it hits you with a massive aromatic payload of warm salted caramel and rich whisky barrel notes, backed by classic accents of raisin and oak vanilla. The palate is deeply luxurious and full bodied, layering decadent dark chocolate and sweet chocolate chip cookies over a velvety, slick, and oily foundation. The intense sweetness is flawlessly balanced by a roasty back end and a fine pinch of sea salt on a soft, slow-sipping finish.
